Final Fantasy: 25 Greatest Villains

24. Ravus (XV)

Large question marks were raised upon the initial release of Final Fantasy XV about how finished it actually was. The open world that was explorable for the game’s first nine chapters devolved into a corridor simulator for the final six, with many characters that had been seemingly established as important to the narrative short-changed by a rushed conclusion.

Ravus was one of these. Driven by the will to prevent his sister Lunafreya from having to sacrifice her life to fuel Noctis’ destiny, he seeks to kill the Astrals to prevent her from forming covenants with them, before being convinced of Noctis’ righteousness and seeking to aid him after her passing.

This was very poorly explained in the base game, however, and when Ravus was transformed into a daemon by Ardyn, few thought much of it, with many only discovering his motivations by reading the letters scattered around his dead body.

Post-release additions to the story (which increase his role) and the Episode Ignis downloadable content episode flesh out Ravus much further, making his tortured anguish more apparent and giving him some truly standout moments as he mourns Lunafreya’s loss and fights alongside Ignis (scored by some amazing musical tracks for added impact).

He could’ve been so much more, but Ravus is far from the forgettable entity seen in the original version of XV and has been redeemed significantly by time.
