The Future

Final Fantasy VII is the most beloved JRPG of all time, and with competition from Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Breath of Fire, Wild Arms and Persona, suffice to say the crown is well earned. The magic of Midgar and Cloud and Co’s ventures to new, exciting locations was at the centre of its success, and though the 2020 remake covers merely a portion of the original’s tale, it loses none of the heart.

The franchise has been forever changed not only by the Remake’s overwhelming critical and commercial success, but also its approach to game design; stubbornly upholding the components that made the original so great and propping it up with gameplay mechanics that the series has masterfully developed some 23 years later. Characters are elevated by their gorgeous facelifts thanks to modern hardware, the narrative is deeper --and more atmospheric-- than ever before and environments are finally given the graphical upgrades that the narrative and gameplay mechanics are so deserving of.

The storied Final Fantasy series has seen numerous changes and alterations with each new entry; who knew the secret to rejuvenating the franchise lied in returning to the past?
