Final Fantasy 7 Remake Sequel - 10 Bold Predictions
7. Fort Condor And/Or Gold Saucer Become Huge Time-Sinks
It is possible to play through the original game without paying any attention to Fort Condor outside of a short story-mandated trip in disc two. It can be visited much earlier than that, however, and must actually be visited on sixteen different occasions to get everything out of it. Each visit tasks the player with engaging in a rudimentary tower defence style game.
Square-Enix made a brief foray into the tower defence genre, which has been massively popularised by games like Plants vs Zombies, with Crystal Defenders in 2008.
Using Fort Condor to revisit it in Part II would be a great way for them to enhance the length of the game, putting up unique items and other rewards (such as limit breaks and SP enhancements) as an incentive as they did with the Corneo Coliseum and Shinra Battle Simulators in Part I.
There is a chance that Fort Condor could be skipped over entirely, however, given the role that the Gold Saucer amusement park has to play. Having an area filled to the brim with minigames (as XIV’s iteration of the Saucer is) and Fort Condor in the same game could easily lead to accusations of padding runtime without expanding the story.
Gold Saucer could be expanded gradually over episodes easily enough, however, as things like Chocobo Breeding/Racing and Battle Square could easily be pushed back to later.
Here’s hoping that both have a part to play.
