Much of the praise around the remake has centered on the action-focused combat system, which offers a great amount of offensive and defensive variety and versatility across the four characters. Each plays very uniquely, whilst materia has been well implemented into the system with plenty of new varieties offering strategic depth.

Given that the remake boasts just four enemy skills to learn, single digit volumes of positive and negative status effects, a small selection of armour and accessories (with only basic effects and nothing veering towards endgame territory like Auto Haste, Ribbon and the like) and just a fraction of the magic, command, support and independent materia, expect collections of these to increase massively in Part II.

The likes of Gravity, Earth and Mystify magic start arriving on the scene a few towns after Midgar in the original, and would seem a lock for inclusion, whilst options like Manipulate and Morph create more opportunities for acquiring rare items and skills from enemies.

Throw in some things further ways to boost stats and gains (such as Speed Plus), mechanics that have become series mainstays (such as Bravery and Faith to boost attacking and magical output) and hundreds of other ideas that Square Enix’s creative teams can come up with, and you have a combat system that continues to become deeper and deeper over time.
