Final Fantasy VII Remake: 10 Things Everybody Missed In The New Trailer

10. No More Custom Character Names

Over the years, it's become increasingly hard-pressed to find an RPG that still lets you name your character, as although the feature used to be a staple of the genre (despite everyone then referring to every character by their designated names anyway), developers realised it was usually better to actively let you 'role play' a given avatar, rather than be a total blank slate. As such, right at the beginning of FF VII's new footage, you'll hear Biggs clarify the name of the mysterious Shinra SOLDIER is "Cloud Strife", an immediate deviation from the past where you were the literal star of the show. This was most likely done to get around Square programming some sort of voice recognition software to speak what you type in, Fallout 4-style - or writing a script that never refers to Cloud by name, as Final Fantasy X had to do whenever Tidus was around.
