Final Fantasy: Who Is The Best Character From Each Game?

8. VII - Reno & Rude

Final Fantasy Characters
Square Enix

A safe bet would've been seeing either Cloud or Sephiroth appear under this heading, given that one of them always seems to lose to Link in the final of GameFAQs' Character Battle polls. Final Fantasy VII is often viewed with rose-tinted glasses, however, and to offer a controversial opinion, both are overrated - Sephiroth's grand plan is almost a note-for-note rehash of Kefka's, whilst Cloud has almost zero reedeming features as a protagonist.

They nevertheless inhabit a wonderfully-crafted narrative populated by a number of fantastic characters - Vincent plays the enigmatic outsider to near perfection, Aeris is the personification of innocence, Cid thrives as the everyman thrown into the mix (and his wondrous sweary outbursts will be sorely missed when they are inevitably removed from the forthcoming remake with voice acting) and Rufus excels as a corporate villain, far more realistic than his assorted predecessors.

Two of Rufus' Turks, Reno and Rude, emerge as one of the best double acts to ever grace a television screen. Though their contrasts are many, the two have excellent chemistry and it's hard to ever see them as villains after witnessing scenes such as them awkwardly talking about girls, refusing to fight the heroes because it's their day off from work and Rude pulling an identical pair of sunglasses from his pocket after being shocked at the breakage of another. Truly spectacular.
