Another unique twist to the series in Final Fantasy XV is the levelling system.

As with other entries, experience is earned through battles, main missions and side quests. However, no matter how many points you earn, none apply to your characters until you pitch camp or find a hotel or lodge to rest your weary heads.

Erecting a tent offers more than just levelling your characters though. Gladiolus improves his survival skills with every campsite forged, earning bonuses along the way. Ignis uses the food collected during the day to recreate recipes he has learned from your pit stops in garages and restaurants, and eating the food gives the characters stat bonuses for the following day.

For Prompto, it is a chance to review the day's photographs, and the player can save their favourites. Random character events also occur, encouraging your bond with your travel companions to grow deeper. In my first hour, Gladiolus challenged me to a sprint across the beach as a way to encourage my stamina training, for example.

Needless to say, I kicked his ass. Go train yourself before coming to lecture me, Gladiolus!
