The crystal entrusted to the Lucis line is actually the heart of Eos (covered later), and it is no coincidence that the crystal has the power to battle the Starscourge, nor that Eos was the goddess of the dawn.

Her very presence brought light to the world, and with the light was the power to banish daemons. This is why Ardyn's plan is to rid the world of light, so that daemons can take over and destroy mankind.

Ifrit was also aware of Eos' power – or perhaps he just simply loved her – and so after she was banished into the underworld, he followed her so as to bring light back to the world.

After the player rides the metaphorical Doomtrain in Pitioss, the dungeon goes topsy-turvy – this represents Ifrit entering the underworld. After an hour or so of descending, finding the chained statue of Eos, Noctis only ever then travels up, following trails of black slime.

This is Ifrit's rapid rise to the surface as he struggles to keep Eos – covered in Starscourge – alive.

Depending on your point of view, Ifrit either accidentally saved mankind by bringing the light back to Eos, or doomed mankind by inadvertently bringing the Starscourge up from the underworld.
