Weapon Type is displayed on the small character portraits, or next to the unit’s name at the top of the screen. There are four colours: Red, Blue, Green, and Grey.

As the symbol in the bottom-right of the battle screen reminds you, Red weapons are strong against Green ones, Green strong against Blue, and Blue strong against Red. The weapon types are:

Melee Weapon (Sword/Lance/Axe): Physical damage. Range is one square.

Tome (Red/Blue/Green): Magical damage. Range is two squares.

Dragonstone (Red/Blue/Green): Magical damage. Range is one square.

Bow (Grey): Physical damage. Bonus damage against Flying units. Range is two squares.

Dagger (Grey): Physical damage. Can reduce enemy stats. Range is two squares.

Staff (Grey): Magical damage. Range is two squares.

Note that Physical Damage (from a Sword, Lance, Axe, Bow, or Dagger) is affected by Defence, while Magical Damage (from a Tome, Dragonstone, or Staff) is affected by Resistance. It’s also important to stress that the ranged units (those with a range of two squares) cannot hit units that are directly adjacent to them.

This means that, while ranged Heroes can ping melee units safely from a distance, if the melee unit gets in close, the ranged Hero will be unable to retaliate to their attack - which can be especially devastating if your ranged characters get trapped in a corner!
