Five Years Later: 10 Things You Learn Replaying Fallout 4
8. The Crafting System Is Amazing
One thing a lot of games which involve collecting lots of junk from around the world struggle with is making everything you pick up useful. What's the point of picking up all of this stuff if you aren't ever going to use it for anything? That's what makes Bethesda's crafting system in Fallout 4 so brilliant.
Every item in the world you pick up contains components, and these are essential for helping you construct upgrades for your guns and power armour that you journey through The Commonwealth with. Bethesda give you a huge amount of customisation and upgrade options for your guns, which means that you can take even the most basic rifle and turn it into a super-mutant destroying monster with enough tender love and care.
The catch is that while some components such as screws come along with every pipe-pistol you pick up from the raider you just dismembered, there are some which are much rarer. This can lead to desperate searches for very specific objects which contain the component you need, adding another layer of depth to the game's exploration.
This leaves the player with agonising decisions as to whether they want to sell off their expensive new item for caps at the risk that they may not have a necessary component when they need it down the line. It's a very engaging system, which provides both new reasons for exploration and endless customisation of your character's playstyle.
