Five Years Later: 10 Things You Learn Replaying Fallout 4
7. The Base System Feels Pointless
Guns weren't the only thing you could craft in Fallout 4. You could also use it to help build settlements for the people of the Commonwealth to reside in, complete with defences and shops run by settlers.
While this makes sense within the context of a Fallout game, and it would be a shame to see the option disappear entirely from future games, it feels as though Bethesda weren't quite able to capture the essence of what makes titles like Minecraft so enjoyable to build in.
Put simply, the bases you build serve virtually no purpose in the wider game. While they serve as good places to store your collection of power armour sets or to get large amounts of purified water, the bases have no impact on the story or the world whatsoever, meaning that all the effort that goes into building them feels wasted.
Add in the fact that the complex menus make learning how the system works and choosing what to build a chore and you have a recipe for an underwhelming feature.
The bases may have been somewhat pointless in Fallout 4, however that shouldn't discourage Bethesda from building on the system further. It just needs fleshing out to be more consequential and intuitive to use.
