Five Years Later: 10 Things You Learn Replaying Fallout 4

6. The Side-characters Are A Mixed Bag

Fallout 4
Bethesda

Fallout is a franchise that lends itself well to having a wacky cast of characters (all that radiation must take a toll on people), and fortunately Bethesda delivered that in Fallout 4. However, while many of these characters are interesting when you first meet them, many of them simply fade into the background, which is a shame, because Bethesda had some truly awesome ideas with some of them.

Take Nick Valentine, Diamond City's resident private detective. He is a synth that escaped The Institute and is now living in a world where he is feared by many. Despite this, he remains committed to helping those who need it. A character like this has the potential to be a massive point of interest throughout the story, especially given the debate put forward about the integration of AI into society, yet he disappears from the story after only a couple of missions.

The best way to get the most out of the side characters on a play-through is to commit to keeping one with you at all times, as it allows you to build a relationship with them based on what you do, and can ask on their opinions on the events of the game as it unfolds.

However, it's a shame that Bethesda couldn't find a more natural way to flesh some of these characters out. Still, this can to an extent be passed off as a limitation of the genre rather than Bethesda themselves.

Alfie Seymour hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
