Game Publishers Of 2019: 6 Biggest Winners & 6 Biggest Losers

11. Winner: Second-Party Devs Going Indie

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
Remedy

Regardless of Microsoft's first-party buying spree and Sony finally closing the deal with Insomniac Games, 2019 saw a strange trend of second-party developers breaking free and doing it for themselves.

Supermassive Games had enjoyed an exclusive relationship with Sony since its inception a decade ago but their new game, Man of Medan, also released on PC and Xbox. Microsoft has gripped onto Remedy Entertainment since 2010, but Control came to Sony's PS4 as well.

Additionally, Kojima Games announced their much-hyped PS4 exclusive Death Stranding is coming to PC next year. Plus Quantic Dream, a Sony-loyal developer, is bringing all their former exclusive backlog to Epic Game Store.

It looks like the days of second-party devs could be fading. Publishers might have to break out their chequebook to keep things exclusive going forward.
