Gamescom 2019: 10 Announcements That Would BREAK The Internet
6. Microsoft Announce Their Handheld Console
So far, Microsoft haven't been all that fussed with expanding their hardware output away from the core Xbox console.
Sure, they have variations on the Xbox One itself, but where Sony have branched out with VR and even the Vita (to varying degrees of success, of course), Microsoft haven't attempted to follow suit.
That might all be changing however, as a patent filed in July suggests they're gearing up to release a handheld console to rival Nintendo's Switch. The patent indicates that the "console" is essentially going to be two separate Xbox controllers that attach to a smartphone or tablet, rather than a dedicated piece of hardware. It's not confirmed, but that would suggest Xbox Games Pass would take centre stage as the delivery method for actually playing these games via xCloud's streaming infrastructure.
Yanko Design's editor Sarang Sheth created some 3D renders based on the information released (seen above), which better visualises the strange system.
