Now you might ask, why isn’t the Ultimate Edition and OG version rolled into the same entry on this list?

Well, there is more than enough here to justify the first outing by The Coalition as something more than a remaster, and a game that can stand on its own. Going forward, this should be the only way players experience the first Gears of War.

The biggest changes were that combat feels a lot more fluid, and not as stagnant as the 2006 version now tends to feel. Mainly, although we never realised it at the time, now you can fight more than four enemies at once. The missing chapters that were at one time only available on the PC are now here too.

Of course in this added hour Delta team have to split up, but there is also a decent boss fight against a Brumak and this also explains why Marcus and Dom have to jump on a moving train.

The superb graphical upgrade can go unmentioned, sure back in its day Gears of War was the benchmark in graphical power, but it has aged quite a bit since the heyday. But Ultimate Edition could actually be mistaken for a current title and frankly, this was a promising first effort from the Coalition.

Now all we need is the same treatment for 2 and 3.
