Ghost Of Tsushima: 10 Reasons Why It's A Game Of The Year Contender
6. Kurosawa Mode
Akira Kurosawa was a legendary Japanese director and is considered one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema.
What made Kurosawa stand out was that despite working mostly as a director and screenwriter, he would involve himself in almost all aspects of film production and was one of the main editors for his own films. This approach to filmmaking would be the reason why films like Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha and Ran were of such high quality.
Kurosawa’s samurai films would be remembered as his best work and had a clear influence on Sucker Punch when developing Ghost Of Tsushima. As huge fans of samurai cinema themselves, they wanted to create a way for players to feel like they were playing their favourite samurai films.
Once the mode is turned on, a black and white filter will cover the game, the wind will be more ferocious and the dialogue will switch to a Japanese dub with English subtitles.
This mode will deprive players of the colourful vistas on offer, but it is an example of the game proudly wearing its inspiration on its sleeves and paying respect to Kurosawa’s filmmaking.
