GTA Trilogy Remake - Every Gameplay Detail You Need To Know

5. All-New Lighting Engine

GTA 3 definitive edition
Rockstar

Rockstar have gone an extra step in remastering the original trilogy by completely revamping the in-game lighting system,

The first in-game shot of the trailer comes via GTA: San Andreas, showing CJ standing alone in the middle of the Bone County desert. Much like the first entry, a neat comparison shot shows the exquisite changes made to the lighting in the game. The colour pops out, though it looks like Rockstar may have purposefully lowered the brightness on the original shot; surely it wasn't actually that dark?

The shrubs CJ stands around are a dark green now, having effectively faded into the background during the first shot. Furthermore, the sand is now a crisp golden brown, having been rather dull the first time around.

Rockstar's writeup on the enhancements also confirms improvements made to in-game shadows and reflections, which is abundantly clear during a later scene. Here a train turns right of Chinatown, its headlights bouncing back off the street sign.

Lighting wasn't a huge issue for the development team back in the day, hence why a large chunk of the open-world would now be classed as fading into the background. With this new system, though, it'll provide a nice opportunity to see all those glorious cutscenes in stunning quality.
