10 Things That Almost Completely Changed GTA History
9. GTA Was Almost Called Race 'n' Chase
Over the years, Rockstar have built an enviable brand in Grand Theft Auto, which is guaranteed with every release to sell many millions of units. At this stage, they could completely ruin the game, tell everyone they had done it on purpose, and GTA VI would still sell an eye-watering amount. And though the violence, the brilliantly executed open-world universe, and enduring characters and storylines are pushed forward as the chief selling points of the franchise, the name is a major part as well. Grand Theft Auto sells the concept brilliantly, and certainly a lot better than the originally intended title of Race 'n' Chase. According to a leaked concept document dating back to 1995, that's what GTA would have been called, and though many details would have been the same, such as car-jacking, police response and running over pedestrians, there would have been significantly less focus on committing crimes and more on racing. The aim of the game would have been "to produce a fun, addictive, and fast multi-player car racing and crashing game which uses a novel graphics method according to the heads of DMA Design (the early fore-runner to Rockstar North.) But there would still have been a diluted GTA experience, as initial mission types would have included "a straight race across the city," a free-roaming demolition derby and a bank robbery. It's still hard to imagine a behemoth, hundred million selling series called Race 'n' Chase.
