Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, just over 17 years after International Track & Field on the original Playstation. In that latter game, mashing the buttons was a core part of the gameplay experience. In GTA V, players could take part in various athletic mini-games, such as the triathlon. On those occasions, gamers were still encouraged to hammer buttons to go faster. That's an antiquated piece of gameplay design, and it's something GTA VI really needs to do away with. A more contextual approach would be preferable, one that's visible in many other games. These days, gamers shouldn't be suffering sore fingers from constantly bashing away at their control pad, there's surely a more enjoyable approach. For VI, it'd be genuinely nice to see Rockstar include a new control layout to govern walking, running and sprinting. Simply pressing a button more firmly in should be enough to see characters sprinting. Having the character tire out due to prolonged running stretches isn't a problem, but there's no need for button mashing nowadays.
