The premise of Halo 5: Guardians is perhaps one of the series' most personal and character-focused yet; to the outsider, Halo's stories may seem very convoluted and complex, so while it may seem like a step back from typical action fare, it's a great opportunity to tell a fantastic, intimate story set against a backdrop of despair and war. However fans of the single-player campaign have often said that previous Halo titles' campaigns were too short and rushed their way to the end; Halo 5 could be the kind of defining title that Halo 3 was, by putting the emphasis on the campaign as opposed to the multiplayer. That means a much-longer story, between 20 and 30 hours, that can fully explore the character of the Master Chief and his pursuer, Spartan Locke. If the build up is anything to go by, the focus is on the two as opposites side of a coin, leading to an inevitable confrontation. The story leading up to that confrontation could make it a truly epic moment in the Halo series, one that won't be possible if it happens three or four hours into the game. Look at the popularity of slow-build drama these days, e.g. True Detective, House of Cards or Breaking Bad, and think what Halo 5 could learn from them. Guardians could reward fans with an innovative, slow-burning story with a mass pay off at the end. What do you think could make Halo 5: Guardians stand out? Let us know in the comments!
