Halo Infinite: 10 Ways To Save The Franchise
3. A Strong And Intimidating Villain
Halo games have always had a strange relationship with their lead villains. Each game seems to have its own primary antagonist, not carrying over from the previous game. Halo 5 no longer dealt with the Forerunners from Halo 4, with the Didact no where to be seen, instead the lead villain role went to Cortana.
While having Cortana as the main villain is an interesting idea, her inclusion in Halo 5 undermined the ending of Halo 4 and changed her character for the worse. The war she alludes to waging against humanity with the Created (A. I.) at her side is just not that interesting.
Not to mention that Cortana used the Prometheans, easily Halo's most boring enemy faction, as her cannon fodder.
So far, from what we've seen of Infinite, 343 seem to be tapping into what made Halo 2's villain Tartarus so compelling. At the end of the gameplay demo we were treated to our first look at Escharum, a new Banished commander who looks both intimidating and interesting.
His request to fight Master Chief as his last battle is the kind of things players want to hear before diving into the game and facing off with him.
