6. Hitman 2

IO Interactive

When IO Interactive split from Square Enix, many fans feared the worst - until it was confirmed they got to keep the Hitman IP.

Turns out, it's been the best thing for the company and the franchise. Hitman 2 is nothing short of the best entry in the series so far, boasting level designs and a level of intricacy to its A.I. pathways that genuinely boggles the mind. IO have created what feels like actual chunks of playable life, encouraging you to explore in any direction, and rewarding you in tow.

The mission I tried was set at an F1 race, though with a weaponised robot manufacturer also being present. Targets were one of the drivers and another attending the show separately, and of course you could rig the androids themselves to take out your target, if you fed the targeting computer a specific ID card.

Taken as a whole; the gorgeous graphics, array of gameplay possibilities, seemingly endless replayability and a level of scriptwriting that encourages you to be mischievous as hell, Hitman 2 is outstanding in every regard.
