Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

3. Portkeys

Because Pokemon Go was the innovator in this model, Wizards Unite had some pressure to add in its own "second generation" innovations and easily the most clever and best-worked is the Portkey function. In place of Pokemon Go's eggs, portkeys can be collected, combined with keys to open them (gotta add another level of gamification there, kids) and then opened by travelling the required distance.

The reward isn't then simply another collectible: rather elegantly, a portkey transports the user to a magical location from within the Wizarding World. A portal opens and you're thrust into a part of the universe you've grown up loving, as if it's part of the real world.

Not only is it a nice spin on the "walk to open" function, but it also dials into the need of most Potter fans to have some hint of that magical world's existence.
