How FromSoftware Should Make Bloodborne 2
Keeping Bloodborne's Essence Intact
Of course, Bloodborne 2 shouldn’t undergo a dramatic paradigm shift to slower, blocking-heavy combat, or anything like that. The quick, agile Hunters (with their firearms in their off hands to score parries) are another part of what differentiates the IP from Dark Souls. The loss of the dodging, counterattacking and use of Rally to regain lost health would be the loss of Bloodborne’s own unique identity.
The most important thing with a follow-up would be to continue the first game’s legacy in a way that doesn’t compromise it as a complete product. Reliving the ‘glory’ days of the beast hunts would be a thrill, but there’s just so much scope to expand. Bloodborne itself opened up into a thrilling Lovecraftian tale that was almost unrecognizable from its earlier stages, so this is something else to keep in mind.
Balancing the old and the new, the Gothic horror with the eldritch terrors, the past of Yharnam and its potential future… all of these things can and should be addressed in a sequel. The first game didn’t have a ‘true’ ending, strictly speaking, so it would be hard to continue the narrative from the deaths of the Hunter, Gehrman or the Moon Presence (or all three, depending on how you look at these complex matters), but maybe there’s no need to.
