Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast PS4 Review: Does It Still Hold Up?

Star Wars Jedi Outcast
LucasArts

First up, this port seems to be the same one that Aspyr did for the Mac some years ago now. So as they seemingly just had this version laying around, we now have it on the PS4 and Switch, but how do the visuals hold up?

On PS4 this game looks just about as good as any id Tech 3 game would on modern 4K TVs, the character models have been cleaned up, but some environments seem to have fallen by the wayside - most obviously random panels and buttons.

Some of the level design is notably a lot more blocky and rudimentary than what we would come to expect from today, so be ready for a lot of corridors and lumps passing for furniture. A nice surprise is the skyboxes (whenever the player gets to go outside) look very crisp and for the most part, holds up. There is also still something fascinating about Lightsabers leaving their mark on the environment - not many games back then could handle this and most still don’t attempt it now.

Id Tech 3 was a powerhouse of its time and that is evident here, but to really help this port stand out and become a true love letter to Star Wars, seeing Jedi Outcast remastered in Unreal Engine 4 - which Fallen Order is being built on, would have helped sell this so much more, and probably eaten that game's lunch.
