Leaked New PS4 Model 'Neo': Everything You Need To Know

6. It's Up To Developers To Upgrade Older Games

Bethesda

Whilst the new console will play everything by default, don't expect any functionality to appear by default. Popping in a copy of Fallout 4 on your shiny new NEO won't suddenly fix the framerate and texture pop-in issues - instead, developers have to allocate time and priorities to enhancing their older work.

At the heart of this, it means studios would need to pay their coders additional funds or reorganise their working day to upgrade an older game, for no immediate benefit. It's precisely why backwards compatibility hasn't been applied to every single game on Xbox One, and why the PS Store charges a fee to play older titles - devs need to get paid. Simple as.

There's no immediate monetary benefit to spending a few weeks making oldergames run better, when 9/10 developers are looking forward and working tirelessly towards their next release. It'll be great to see what something like The Witcher, Fallout 4and Dark Souls would look like under more powerful specs, but it's going to be up to CD Projekt RED, Bethesda and FromSoftware respectively, to put the time in.
