6. The Battle Levels Are Oddly Reminiscent Of Mario Kart

A big new feature of the game is the introduction of Battle Levels, a much more multiplayer geared mode where up to four players can compete on licence-themed arenas. The actually game types are pretty standard – versus, capture the flag – but there’s plenty of things to add personality, like weapons that can be found in magic bubbles alongside environment power ups.

If that all sounds a little like Mario Kart’s comparative mode, then just wait until you play it; it’s pretty much the same, just with running Lego figures instead of cars.

The balloon battles were always an underrated part of the racing game for me, and it’s nice to see another product put so much focus on them (they are pretty fun, if a tad basic). What’s really missing, for now at least, is the ability to go all in and use some of the vehicles; if you’re going to copy Mario Kart, you might as well take its biggest thing.
