Madden NFL 21 Review: 4 Ups & 8 Downs

8. Intrusive MUT Ads Kill The Experience

Madden 21
EA Sports

Fire up Madden 21 and you'll be asked the same question repeatedly: DO YOU WANT TO PLAY ULTIMATE TEAM?

Boot up the disc, ULTIMATE TEAM. Go to the main menu, ULTIMATE TEAM. Hover over Franchise Mode, ULTIMATE TEAM. Go to phone your mother and ask if she wants to meet up for a coffee, ULTIMATE TEAM. ULTIMATE TEAM, ULTIMATE TEAM, ULTIMATE TEAM!

Those bold inserts are likely getting a bit grating by now, but that's deliberate. It's what playing Madden 21 is like; EA don't hide the fact that they want you to play MUT and nothing else, if only so you plump more cash into that game you've just bought and rely on microtransactions to fast-track your way to NFL success.

These ads are constant - they're bloody everywhere! The most irritating thing is that you can't switch them off either. Madden 21 will encourage you to play Ultimate Team every single time you start, and they'll bombard you with new deals incessantly.
