Mafia 3: 8 Big Things It Got Wrong

2. The Police Are Useless

The police in Mafia 3 pose very little threat. When a witness is triggered after stealing a car, by the time they’ve run to a phone and called the police, you are usually already miles outside the police search zone before it appears on the map, meaning the risk of creating a witness by committing a crime is meaningless.

The ‘suspicion’ warning that appears when police go past Lincoln is a nice touch, as it alludes to the attitudes of the 1960s era where police were unfairly suspicious of most black people. However, even this feature isn’t used properly. When you drive past a police car, the warning will appear on screen, but unless you stay within the meter for ages, nothing will happen. You can pretty much go speeding right past police officers, drifting around them at traffic lights, and they won’t react.

If you do manage to get chased by New Bordeaux’s finest, losing them doesn’t take much effort - just a couple of turns down side streets and they can’t keep up.

Sometimes, if you take a sharp turn hard enough, the car following you can flip, roll and explode all by itself (which is pretty cool to see, to be fair). Still, Mafia 3’s law enforcement never poses much of a threat, which removes some of the challenge and makes the very idea of law enforcement nothing more than a minor annoyance.
