Mafia 3 Reviews: 10 Early Reactions You Need To Know
4. Open-World Lacks That GTA-Level Of Interaction
Unlike other open world games the Mafia series has never been about accomplishing side-missions or going off on tangents to engage in activities that aren't related to the main plot. However, although many people praised this streamlined approach in the past, players in 2016 expect their open world games to be full to the brim with distractions and varied content that can be just as exciting as the main game itself.
Unfortunately it seems that those who got the game early or are picking it up now are slowly finding out that, actually, there isn't much of anything to do in Mafia 3's brilliantly realised open world.
A forum-goer by the name of "redditttah" explained that "there's lots of interiors, but nothing to do in them outside the main missions and pointless collectables." while another user, The_Honest_Owl, backed this up in the same thread by explaining:
"After the tutorial missions though, the main missions feel like side missions, and they're boring as hell.... The atmosphere is nice but I feel like there isn't much to do in it. You can't walk into a bar or diner and sit down, I miss refilling my cars with gasoline like in Mafia 2, [and] I can't change Lincoln's clothes..."
It's a sense of lifelessness felt by even those who are thoroughly enjoying the game too. Although IGN's Marty Silva in a tweet praised the game's story, characters and set-pieces, even he couldn't help but add that the open world map itself feels a bit lifeless.
