The main progression system in Avengers, by the sounds of things, comes in the form of the skill trees for each character. Now, the days of getting excited about levelling up characters have long since passed, as almost every blockbuster these days features this ordinary system, and has replaced anything interesting with bog-standard stats like 'better aiming', 'more health' and 'more attack damage'.

Now, it's probably inevitable that Marvel's Avengers will feature some of the same mundane skills to unlock, but from what the developers have mentioned, it seems as though they're trying to make each skill tree satisfying and unique to the individual heroes.

Consequently, players will be able to transform each member of the team radically, giving them new moves, abilities and weapons that will keep the combat interesting. The proof will be in the pudding, but it's at least encouraging that the devs are talking about how the gear and skills will be more substantial than negligible stat upgrades.
