Mass Effect 4: 10 Features That MUST Return
6. Loyalty Missions
Loyalty missions are the best. Even the ones that are weaker mechanically are so great at helping develop your relationships further.
ME2 is my favourite game, and one of its very best features comes from giving significant time to each of its crew, exploring their own personal issues; allowing them a space to cope with family, morality, identity and the ethics of the actions they’ve committed. The game is at its finest when confronting Mordin over the implications of genocide, or talking with Jack about the trauma she’s suffered.
Mass Effect 3 is another game that’s better than it gets credit for, but one of its biggest problems is the lack of loyalty missions. While all of the crew get their character moments, not having specific missions devoted to each character was a missed opportunity. Andromeda bringing them back was a right step, even if it was more of an excuse for flashy missions and enjoyable chemistry between Ryder and the crew member in question.
Combining improvements in mission design and intensive character work into future loyalty missions would be perfect for a future sequel. The series will always need more moments like Tali finding her father.
