The most important initial decision in making a good gaming movie is to hire someone who actually knows, loves and can do justice to the source material. If you hire someone who hasn't even delved into Mass Effect once before, there's every chance that the movie that follows it will be a complete stinker. At the time of writing, no director has been attached to the project. We do however know that Bioware's Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Casey Hudson were all rumoured to be involved at some point, with each given the label 'Executive Producer'. If these guys are involved, hopefully they can negotiate a deal with the right director and make sure that the decisions made going forward are as good for the fans as they can be. Literally the first thing that should be asked of the director of this movie is if they know the source material. There's a lot to learn about Mass Effect (particularly since the universe has been extended in other mediums such as books) so it is important to have an understanding of the backstory, the presentation of the galaxy, the personalities of the characters, the way the plot develops and absolutely everything before this person is given free reign to make a movie on it. Don't let us down Universal - we demand a director who knows hiher Reapers from their Rachni.
Dan Curtis is approximately one-half videogame knowledge, and the other half inexplicable Geordie accent. He's also one quarter of the Factory Sealed Retro Gaming podcast.
