Metal Gear Solid: 20 Things That Made You Love Hideo Kojima

9. The Rex Vs. Ray Fight In MGS 4

What's the point in having a game centred around the existence of walking battle-tanks if you're not eventually going to have them go face-to-face? Such a thought wasn't on anyone's mind throughout the first few games, as the general existence of Metal Gears within with the world itself (aside from the closing battle of 2) were usually posited as the 'big bad' final boss or encounter. However, come the mid-point of MGS 4 and the return to Shadow Moses (more on that later) you finally get to pilot Metal Gear Rex, only for Ocelot to pop up in the Ray model - and as the cutscene stops and you realise you're actually going to fight each other; it's fan-service overload. https://youtu.be/ciIVuUzhs2o?t=138 What followed was pure over-the-top fun, giving you access to everything from rockets and gatling guns to a series of contextual 'finishers' if you set them up right. Game series' never have the appropriate means to set up confrontations like this with such a mix of nostalgia and purpose, and Kojima Productions knocked this out the park and into a neighbouring stratosphere in the process.
