Let's get the most discussed and obvious one out of the way first. In the E3 2014 trailer for the game, a young, blonde boy named Eli was introduced, described as a "youth who curses his fate". Sound familiar? Yes, the internet collectively come to the conclusion that Eli is actually a young Liquid Snake and to be fair, it's pretty easy to see why. Liquid had always believed that he was the result of Big Boss' recessive genetic traits (and therefore, inferior) so it would make sense for him to "curse his fate". Plus, the timeline matches up too. Liquid was born in 1972 and The Phantom Pain is set in 1984, making him about twelve years old during the game's events. Eli's exact age is unclear but he certainly looks to be about the same. Some have pointed to Liquid's upbringing as a counter-point to this theory (he was raised in the UK) but that's something that could easily be retconned by Hideo Kojima; it's a relatively minor detail, after all. Ultimately, Eli could be a completely different character after all - it's going to be impossible to tell until the game's release.
