6. Gray Fox

Despite only appearing in the original Metal Gear Solid in his ninja form, Gray Fox has maintained a steady fanbase within the MGS community. His involvement in the original Metal Gear games might have endeared him to some but honestly, most people like Gray Fox because he's a badass cyborg ninja. Before he was Gray Fox though he was Frank Jaeger, and he was a key ally to Big Boss at various times. Importantly, he was involved several African civil wars in the 1980s - the decade in which The Phantom Pain is set. The year is unspecified but at some point during the 80s, Jaeger is rescued by Big Boss (along with Naomi Hunter) and taken to America before the two soldiers return to Africa to continue with the war. This could match up perfectly with the events of The Phantom Pain and seeing Big Boss go out of his way to rescue two well-known Metal Gear characters sets him up beautifully to eventually become a tragic hero. Sure, he might lack a katana and an exoskeleton, but a Big Boss/Frank Jaeger team-up is something that Metal Gear Solid fans will be dying to see - if The Phantom Pain delivers, it's sure to be a hit.
