4. Psycho Mantis

There's been a ton of great villains throughout the Metal Gear Solid franchise but few are as memorable as Psycho Mantis and his memory card reading tricks. His boss fight in the original title is one of the stand-out moments from the entire series and even the vaguest in-game mention of the character would have the fans going wild. So when the GDC 2013 trailer showed a young boy, floating through the ceiling while wearing a gas mask... Well, people went pretty crazy about it. While this one brief shot doesn't exactly confirm a Psycho Mantis appearance in The Phantom Pain, it's hard to argue against it. The timeline works (Mantis was in his 30s when he dies in 2005 so he would be a young boy in 1984) and the gas mask is a key feature of Psycho Mantis' unique look - remember, Hideo Kojima is a very precise man; nothing is done by accident. Plus, the Twin Snakes (the GameCube remake of the original title) depicts Psycho Mantis rising through the ceiling in the exact same manner that the child does in the trailer - come on, it's no coincidence. It's unclear what his role in the game will be (is he just there to toy with us?) but it appears fairly obvious that Psycho Mantis will appear in at least one scene within The Phantom Pain.
