Metal Gear Solid V: 7 Big Questions We Can't Wait To See Answered

6. Is David Hayter In The Game?

Speaking of Liquid and especially Solid Snake, one of the weirdest things about the game's production has been how off-handedly Kojima cast aside the now-legendary David Hayter. As the voice of Snake in everything from the first four Metal Gear Solids to even his cameo in Smash Bros., suddenly finding out he was being replaced by the forever-breathless Kiefer Sutherland was pretty hard to stomach, to say the least. However, it's surely a move done to further differentiate Big Boss from Solid Snake, as although the latter is a clone, there's no way Kojima planned the likes of Phantom Pain way back when still using Hayter to voice both characters. As such, it's entirely possible that a teenage Snake is going to show up at some point, because after all, we can pretty much say Liquid is in the game, voice actor Troy Baker has mentioned the story is absolutely insane - and it'd be the perfect rug-pull to finally slot in the one guy everyone's been demanding since that first announcement. Sadly, the glaring counter-point is that MGS V's Japanese voice cast has remained the same, with Akio ”tsuka reprising the role of Big Boss once again - thereby implying they just didn't want Hayter at all. Kojima mentioned the need to switch him out was down to the fact Hayter couldn't act as well as Kiefer facially, something that perhaps Otsuka is more at home with, being he's starred in a few TV shows. This would make the US version of the game pretty special as we'd have both Sutherland and Hayter potentially acting in the same scene, but again, if Akio is already able to pull off two distinct performances and distinguish Boss from Snake in the first place - that could be exactly why the Japanese cast didn't lose their Snake in the first place.
