Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain - 9 Big Questions It Should've Answered (But Didn't)
4. How Diamond Dogs Turned Into Outer Heaven
It's mentioned in The Phantom Pain that the soldiers Snake recruits always abandon Mother Base once their leader is lost, because essentially, when it boils down to it, outfits like the Diamond Dogs or the MSF only survive because Big Boss is around to keep them all in order. So with this in mind, it's difficult to understand just how the relatively friendly Mother Base turns into the international threat of Outer Heaven. It's clear that Snake's coma at the start of V marks the end of the MSF, and his awakening is the start of the Diamond Dogs, yet the missing link as to how Mother Base became Outer Heaven is suspiciously absent from the final game. While this would be fine if there was another release to fill in the gap, as it stands The Phantom Pain is Kojima's final entry into the series, and thus the mystery behind the most important transition in the history of Big Boss' private military company will most likely never be answered.
