The default textures that appear when your first download the game are the most boring texture there is. What you need is some texture packs and some skins to spice up your Minecraft experience. Mods just completely alter the game to where it is the kind of game you want to play. If you want a gun mod so you can play 16-bit Call of Duty, a couple mods exist for this. If you think the redstone contraptions are too simple download Tekkit and get building a computer inside a computer! If you want to input multiplayer commands into singleplayer; download SinglePlayer Commands. There are so many to choose from; so go out there and download some new mods.
