Monster Hunter World: Ranking Every Weapon From Worst To Best
9. Switch Axe
Pros: Versatile, Phial system adds bonus effects
Cons: No block, limited mobility in sword mode, sharpness deteriorates quickly
Why choose between an axe and sword when you can have both? The Switch Axe, or, if you'd rather, the Transformer of weapons, can switch between both forms on the fly, boasting heaps of versatility and then some. Up against a tricky, evasive opponent? Unfold the axe and match their pace. Got your quarry on the ropes and need to churn out some eye-watering damage? Whip out sword form, baby.
Not just flexibility, but the way in which both modes complement each other through the Phial system makes the Switch Axe a good all-rounder, but not without its hang-ups. Besides requiring more dedication than others to master its technical nature, the hybrid weapon is one of the only heavy-class types not to have access to a block, meaning users need to rely on dodging frequently.
Not a tough ask in the mobile axe form, but get caught with your pants down in sword mode and it'll more than likely be curtains for your poor hunter.
