No one in Mortal Kombat 1 has been revised more heavily than Raiden. In this reborn world, the former Elder God and protector of EarthRealm has become a mortal, a protege of Liu Kang, and the potential champion of the upcoming tournament.

Since he no longer harbours his godlike power, players might worry that Raiden has been turned into a weakling. (He doesn't even have his lightning abilities to begin with in Story Mode.)

But in many ways, the hat-wearing monk has never been stronger. Raiden is an expert at zoning, meaning he can keep his opponent at a distance, effectively controlling the battlefield.

Now, Raiden has always been a great zoner, due to his torpedo dive, super-fast lighting projectile, and his teleportation ability. But this time, his zoning skills have been elevated significantly.

He can perform the torpedo dive in mid-air, teleport mid-combo, and surround himself with lightning bolts, which double as a shield. He can manifest a vast electromagnetic wave in all directions too, stunning his foe. The wave also draws the enemy in, allowing Raiden to pummel them further.

Because of his shocking array of attacks, it's understandable why Liu Kang believes the ex-thunder god should serve as Earthrealm's new champion.
