Mortal Kombat 10: 10 Awesome Game Modes That Must Return
7. King Of The Hill
Another mode added to the 2011 reboot was King Of The Hill theater, an online-only arena mode similar to the spectator lobbies found in most competing fighting brands. Mortal Kombat's version of this familiar idea turns it into an endless brawl for respect and bragging rights, with six players' avatars hurling abuse (and, rarely, praise) during each fight. It's a sometimes lopsided "winner stays" set-up which can lead to frustration for lower-tier fighters, but the allure of building a massive win-streak can be hugely motivating. A spectator option of sorts is expected these days, and the social vibe of King Of The Hill was a great way to implement that. Having your own Xbox LIVE avatar (or one of the ready-made MK avatars, for PSN users) cheering or jeering for the combatants, and then rating their performance post-fight, adds life to an often stale online gaming model. It's hardly a groundbreaking innovation, but would be sorely missed were it to be dropped for Mortal Kombat 10.
Game-obsessed since the moment I could twiddle both thumbs independently. Equally enthralled by all the genres of music that your parents warned you about.
