Frank Dux is the protagonist of the 1988 film Bloodsport, where he is portrayed by Jean-Claude Van Damme. What sets this film apart from the other entries is that Frank Dux is actually a real person, who is still currently alive today.

Dux claims that the events of the film are based on real events that took place, in which he was trained by a mysterious martial arts master named “Senzo ‘Tiger’ Tanaka” and participated in a secret martial arts tournament called “The Kumite”.

Interestingly, the original 1992 Mortal Kombat was originally intended to feature Van Damme’s character from the 1992 film Universal Soldier, however this version of the project fell through. Johnny Cage was later made to replicate aspects of Frank Dux from Bloodsport, namely the ‘Split Punch’ move which both characters use. Johnny Cage’s initials, JC, are also derived from the Jean-Claude portion of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s name.

The inclusion of the character in Mortal Kombat 11 could result in some humorous exchanges between Dux and Cage. The overly violent style of Bloodsport would translate well into Mortal Kombat, and some interesting parallels between Bloodsport’s ‘Kumite’ tournament and the Mortal Kombat tournament could be made.
