2. Smoke

Originally a palette-swap across multiple games, essentially just being an excuse to have a badass black-ninja who cribbed a bunch of moves from the likes of Scorpion and Reptile, Smoke was finally given the justice he deserved in MK 2011, where an all-new re-skin made him look as if Metal Gear's Raiden had discovered his testicles and entered a fighting tournament. Needless to say NetherRealm were more than up for delivering on years of anticipation and fan-fervour, giving Smoke some of the coolest, most visually badass Fatalities of the whole game. Everything from phasing through people just to then watching them spontaneously combust to sticking dudes with his fingers and watching their skin burn off, Smoke is a solid addition to the roster that's been around for years, yet has the benefit of still feeling like a new character.
