Why it makes sense:

Since the Thunder are the team that your future GM played for - in other cases it's the Mavericks - it makes sense that they're the best option when you're in need of a helping hand to start off your off-court career. Losing Noel's defense hurts, but remember that he's a terrible shooter.

Kanter is much better from inside and mid-range, and is actually a better rebounder than Noel. His deal is obviously bigger, but not as big as the one you would need to propose to sign Noel. McDermott is a good player to have on the bench, much better than Powell and his awful contract.
