Why it makes sense:
The Hawks are in a full-on rebuild mode, which means they don't have too many assets to trade away. With three first round picks in the 2018 draft, they should be able to become a lot more interesting in the next season, but now the only way to improve is by generating cap space.
Miles Plumlee has one of the biggest contracts on the team, yet is just a reserve center, so trading him away is a no-brainer. The problem is that the Mavericks are the only takers, so you don't have much of a choice in regards to the player you'll get for him.
