If you've followed the Dallas Mavericks over the years, then you'll be aware the main reason for their success is due to the era of Dirk Nowitzki for two decades from 1998 to 2018. Dirk led the squad to their first NBA final in 2006 opposite the Miami Heat, and while they lost, they would eventually capture their first NBA title just five years later.
Post-Dirk, the squad now bask in the glory that was created by the 2018 arrival of Luka Doncic. The team's head coach, Rick Carlisle, described the Slovenian as "a guy that we think is a franchise foundation piece". Clearly, Carlisle was right. Doncic became the 2019 Rookie of the Year, and became an All-Star player just one year later.
It must be noted that, since the team's championship-winning year, they've either missed the playoffs entirely, or been eliminated in the opening round. Of course, this could - and most likely will - all change in the very near future with Doncic on their books. He's the main reason for any success they have these days, and can be thanked for the team being ranked number three here.
If Luka continues on this meteoric rise of his, we can expect to see the Mavericks rated a tad higher in NBA 2K22.
