Nintendo Switch: 15 GameCube Games That Must Be On Virtual Console

6. Pikmin

It’s easy to level accusations at Nintendo and call Pikmin another Fisher Price style game, a 'My First Real-Time Strategy', but Pikmin has that strange Nintendo habit which means you should never discount their software offerings upon first glance. It might look cute, but later levels, conflicts and time limits have you struggling with frustration as precious Pikmin are stomped and eaten yet again by yet more red Bulborbs wandering unseen.

The game had you marshalling units around you as you directly controlled a character in third-person but had a pointer that could be used to select units with the B button. The Pikmin could also be controlled as groups when using the C-stick. This meant the game was relatively easy to control, but not so easy to beat.

You had to recover a number of spaceship parts in order to repair your ship and fly back to your home planet. The Pikmin were your temporary (enslaved?) labour to help with said goals. You could grow more Pikmin and the different colours represented different unit strengths and speeds.

But facing off against a variety of garden wildlife three or five times the size of you meant many Pikmin would die in the salvation of Olimar. An underrated but well-appreciated classic.
