Nintendo Switch: 15 GameCube Games That Must Be On Virtual Console
12. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
This took everything about the original 5+ million selling PlayStation classic, slapped on the graphics and game mechanics from 2001 Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and added cut scenes that gave Solid Snake the ability to dodge bullets just like Neo from The Matrix.
Okay, so the last feature – not so lauded by gamers – but Twin Snakes was still an excellent game. To revisit the excellent Metal Gear Solid with clean textures, further responsive controls and so much polish was a worthwhile endeavour.
At the time, MGS: Twin Snakes was also seen as a vital boost to the third-party line-up that Nintendo always had difficulty creating with its own consoles. This was a particular problem since the PlayStation had used CDs versus cartridges in its and thus ran away with several former Nintendo franchises like Castlevania and Final Fantasy – and this had a knock-on effect for the GameCube’s own games library. Twin Snakes was a mature, action game that could potentially attract lapsed fans from the 90s.
Its sales weren’t great (unfortunately) and so we didn’t get to see the excellent Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on the ‘Cube. Yet even today The Twin Snakes still sells for upwards of £50 on online auction websites.
